Dr. Kevin McGuire Joins the Virginia Water Resources Research Center and Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources

Kevin McGuire has joined the Virginia Water Resources Research Center and Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources as a research assistant professor.
In conjunction with the Virginia Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, McGuire researches water quality and quantity issues in forest management and forested environments. Specifically, he focuses on how water and nutrients move through landscapes to streams and how management may affect hydrologic processes to improve water quality or runoff regimes. McGuire will also train graduate students, guest lecture, and offer graduate seminar instruction. He has taught graduate courses in hydrology and watershed management at Plymouth State, Oregon State, and Penn State universities.
One of the benefits of McGuire’s new position is the opportunity to interface with a state agency and colleagues across the university. “Since arriving on campus, I’ve had many discussions with colleagues about potential projects,” he noted.
McGuire previously worked at Plymouth State University as an assistant professor of hydrology and as the research hydrologist for the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, a watershed facility of the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station. He received a Ph.D. in forest engineering with a focus in forest hydrology from Oregon State University, an M.S. in forest resources from Penn State University, and a B.S. in environmental science from Susquehanna University.
The College of Natural Resources (http://www.cnr.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech consistently ranks among the top three programs of its kind in the nation. Faculty members stress both the technical and human elements of natural resources and instill in students a sense of stewardship and land-use ethics. Areas of studies include environmental resource management, fisheries and wildlife sciences, forestry, geospatial and environmental analysis, natural resource recreation, urban forestry, wood science and forest products, geography, and international development. Virginia Tech, the most comprehensive university in Virginia, is dedicated to quality, innovation, and results to the commonwealth, the nation, and the world.
