Free Seedlings for Youth Planting Projects
All seedlings are grown by the Virginia Department of Forestry with a grant from the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation. Order seedlings from your County Extension Office by January 10, 2010.
The following free seedlings are available for spring 2010 planting projects:
- Loblolly pine (coastal plain and piedmont)
- White pine (Blue Ridge counties and west)
- Baldcypress (large tree, tolerates wet soils and flooding)
- Northern red oak (large shade tree)
- Chestnut oak (large shade tree, prefers upland soils)
- Red maple (medium to large shade tree, hardy, tolerates wet soils)
- Red mulberry (medium size tree with edible fruit)
- River birch (small tree, hardy, tolerates wet soils)
- Washington hawthorn (small tree, red fruits in winter attract songbirds)
- Red-osier dogwood (thicket forming shrub, good for stream banks)
- Silky dogwood (shrub, good wildlife planting)
Seedling order forms must be faxed or mailed to your County Extension Office by January 10, 2010. Seedling delivery dates will vary by county. Contact your 4-H Extension Agent, Program Assistant or 4-H Volunteer for details.
