Jeffrey Marion - Adjunct Professor, Natural Resource Recreation

Teaching Responsibilities

  • FOR 5984 - Special Study (Recreation Ecology)

Selected Research Activities

  • Assessing Trail Conditions and Development of Long-term Monitoring Protocols for Acadia National Park (National Park Service, 2006-2008): Trail condition monitoring protocols will be developed and applied to formal park trails and a sample of informal (visitor-created) trails to characterize current conditions and understand the relative importance of factors contributing to trail degradation.  Development and application of protocols for monitoring soil and vegetation conditions on the summit of Cadillac Mountain will also be conducted.
  • Evaluating and monitoring the effects of recreational visitation on cliffs and rock outcrops, Great Falls Park, George Washington Memorial Parkway (National Park Service, 2006-2009).  Identification of indicators and development of monitoring protocols to assess the effects of hiking and climbing on cliff-associated natural resources, particularly rare plants.  This study will include assessments of the number and condition of cliff-top and cliff-base recreation sites and assessments of cliff-face conditions along randomly placed transects.
  • Trail Monitoring Protocol Development for the C&O Canal National Historical Park and George Washington National Parkway (National Park Service, 2006-2009): Trail impact monitoring protocols to evaluate visitor-related impact on formal and informal (visitor-created) trails will be developed and applied.  A two-year study designed to evaluate alternative methods for encouraging visitors to remain on formal trails and subsequent improvements in informal trail conditions will also be conducted.
  • Trail Monitoring Protocol Development for Denali National Park (National Park Service, 2006-2009).  Protocols for monitoring the lineal extent, discontinuity, and condition of informal backcountry trails will be developed and applied to a sample of park environments.
